AEROMODELLERS IN WA
Training:
Flight Proficiency Scheme
All members of clubs who have "wings" and fly proficiently may offer to assist new members gain the skills to operate model aircraft. Going solo is the aim of all beginning pilots. Some clubs have formal training procedures. Ask at your club about how to buy a trainer aircraft and arrange to learn to fly.
Supervised flying using a "buddy cord" reduces the chance of unintended operation (crashes) and allows graded exposure to flying demands and gradual increase in flying ability.
The AWA supports the MAAA Flight Proficiency Scheme. There are three levels of proficiency, bronze wings, silver wings and gold wings. These wings are available for powered flight, gliding flight and helicopter flight. Wings are awarded after demonstration of the required proficiency.
Bronze and Silver Wings
The bronze wings for aircraft up to 2kg in weight and the silver wings for aircraft over 2kg is usually attempted after initial training and is generally recognized as the candidate is capable of safe solo flight.
Gold Wings
This standard of operating a model aircraft is higher than Bronze and Silver Wings. The requirements are outlined in MAAA procedures. This level of flight, whether by awarding of wings, or an equivalent standard is required for pilots flying at displays.
MAAA-Certified Instructors - Training and Certification allows a pilot to award wings to other pilots.
Awarding of Wings
Testing for proficiency is conducted by MAAA-certified Instructors.
For more information about the scheme you should make enquiries at your club. Information about the requirements and administration of the scheme can be found on this site in the Manual of Procedures.
Completed forms should sent to the AWA Secretary by email. Supplies of wings are also available from the AWA Chief Flying Instructor.
Bronze, Silver and Gold wings are free to members as they successfully complete their demonstration of proficiency.
Replacement Wings are available to qualified recipients for $6.50 each.
